Why 3LR

Our mantra as a company is ‘Lighting by Emotion’ – and this lies at the heart of everything we do.

Whilst we all know how lighting can transform a space, it’s now been scientifically proven how it actually generates an emotional response from a person. This occurs through the third light receptor in our eyes, which governs how humans emotionally engage with light (hence our company name, 3LR). This receptor develops just 12 weeks after birth and remains with us our entire lives, making light one of the most fundamental ways in which we perceive the world around us.

Understanding lighting’s emotional resonance drives everything we do. That’s why we always ask our clients to consider exactly what they want visitors to feel when entering their space—whether it’s a 20,000-seat stadium, an intimate lounge bar, or a tranquil spa treatment room. As lighting specialists, our role is to listen, understand these needs, and deliver the expertise, technology, and support to create the powerful emotional connections that only considered lighting can achieve.

Simply put, the transformative potential of light is why our company was formed —and it’s this same potential we’re passionate about bringing to every client we work with.

Matt and 3LR provided expert consultancy as we were planning the Royal Ballet and Opera House’s once-in-a-generation production lighting LED upgrade. Their engagement with the stakeholders was thorough and knowledgeable, assessing governance, methodology, delivery, costs, and risk management. Their support of the business case was critically important to us as trusted colleagues in the industry, and their comprehensive understanding of the full range of the project made for a meaningful and valuable contribution.
