Elvis Evolution

The Project

Taking place at Immerse LDN at Excel Waterfront, ELVIS EVOLUTION is a brand new, immersive experience which celebrates the life and work of one of the most influential musicians of all time: Elvis Presley. Combining cutting-edge digital technology, live actors and musicians, mind-blowing multimedia and heart-pounding music, ELVIS EVOLUTION allows audiences to relive the King’s iconic moments, from the unique perspective of Elvis’ childhood friend, Sam Bell. Having delivered similar projects previously such as Warner Bros. Studio Tour in Leavesden, 3LR Lighting was approach to develop and deliver the electrical and technical infrastructure throughout ELVIS EVOLUTION.

The Brief

ELVIS EVOLUTION is a walk-though immersive experience that offers a multi-sensory journey through Elvis’ rags to riches story from country boy to musical icon. The different set pieces include three themed bars, a 1960s diner as well as the studio in which the famous ’68 Comeback Special’ was filmed. In terms of 3LR’s involvement, we were first approached back in the summer of 2024. 3LR’s Director of Special Projects Simon Needle comments: “When we were first contacted, Layered Reality were in the process of taking over what was essentially an empty car park which they wanted to transform into an ambitious immersive experience that celebrated the life and music of Elvis. We were approached to manage, design and install all electrical and data infrastructure across all Technical and Public areas, including F&B and the Kitchen. As you’d expect, the entire experience is fuelled by the technical disciplines of lighting, audio, video, F&B and automation so we had to ensure we designed a system that could facilitate all of these”.

As part of our brief, we had to work closely with each of the creative teams involved; who were bringing in their own equipment and vision and who all had a long list of power and data requirements. Simon explains: “As with any project of this size and ambition, the creative design(s) evolved constantly throughout the building process; something we had to adapt to and take into consideration. Our role was very collaborative and required constant coordination with all of the various creative disciplines and stakeholders.

The Delivery

Being responsible for the site’s technical and electrical requirements as well as the architectural control system, we provided over hundreds of kms of LV & ELV cabling within the space, many km’s of containment, eight new 250A 3PH Distribution Boards and several new Network rooms and Racks. In terms of the architectural control system, we drew on ETC’s Paradigm – a system that the company has drawn on previously and is renowned for its reliability, robustness and ability to integrate into the most complex of systems. As a company with both BAFE and KITE accreditations, we also designed all of the emergency lighting and control throughout the site, with this being devised by our in-house lighting designer Karoliina Hellin. We also subcontracted the electrical work to WS Electrical; a company we have a long-standing relationship with and who carried the work out on-site, alongside the company’s supervision, with invaluable electrical design provided by Richard McWilliam of Leclardo Consulting.
